Assam Improves School Infrastructure but Dropout Rates Remain High: NITI Aayog Report

A NITI Aayog report has revealed that Assam has made major progress in school infrastructure over the past decade, with sharp improvements in electricity, toilets, computers and internet connectivity in schools.

Electricity coverage in schools increased from 20.1% to 88.8%, while functional boys’ and girls’ toilets crossed 93%. Computer availability rose to 78.7% and internet connectivity reached 87.2%.

Despite these gains, Assam continues to face high dropout rates and low enrolment at higher secondary level. The State recorded one of the country’s lowest Higher Secondary Gross Enrolment Ratios at 43.5% and a high secondary dropout rate of 17.5%.

The report also highlighted that transition from secondary to higher secondary education in Assam remains among the lowest in India, raising concerns over student retention in higher classes.
