Assam Introduces Bill to Grant Land Rights to Tea Garden Workers

The Assam government has introduced an amendment Bill to provide land ownership to tea garden workers living in labour lines without legal titles. The Bill proposes excluding labour lines from existing land ceiling rules to allow preferential settlement for workers and protect them from displacement.
The government will acquire and later distribute the land to eligible families, with conditions such as non-transferability for up to 20 years. The move is expected to benefit workers across 825 tea estates in the state.
