Assam Issues New Guidelines to Tackle Rising Human-Elephant Conflict

Amid escalating human-elephant conflicts, the Assam government has introduced new guidelines focused on coexistence and rapid response. Key measures include forming more Gaja Mitra teams in high-conflict areas, using AI-based camera traps, and setting up real-time alert networks.
Watch towers will be built for monitoring, and temporary solar fencing will guide elephants away without blocking their routes. The plan also includes restoring water bodies and creating new water sources in forest areas.
The six-month annual action plan, monitored by district committees, will use CAMPA funds. Assam has reported 71 human deaths and 41 elephant deaths this year.
