Assam May Not Have Leader of Opposition After NDA’s Massive Victory

After Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath for a second term, attention shifted to whether Assam will have a Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the new Assembly. The BJP-led NDA won 102 seats, while Congress secured only 19 seats in the 126-member House.

As per Assembly convention, a party needs at least 21 seats to claim the LoP post. With Congress falling short, legal experts and political observers say Assam may witness a vacant LoP position for the first time in its history.

Experts warned that the absence of an official Opposition leader could weaken democratic accountability and reduce the Opposition’s collective voice inside the Assembly.
