Assam Pushes for Palm Oil Cultivation Amid Environmental Concerns

The Assam government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding palm oil cultivation to achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil production. Agriculture Minister Atul Bora emphasized that this initiative, under the National Mission for Edible Oil—Oil Palm, is crucial for reducing India’s dependency on imported edible oils.

However, the plan faces opposition from regional MPs and environmentalists, who warn of potential deforestation and ecological harm. Despite these concerns, the Assam government remains focused on promoting palm oil cultivation while addressing environmental challenges.
