Assam Revives Intra-State River Trade with First Cargo Run on Kopili

Assam resumed intra-state river cargo transport after over a decade with the first trial run on National Waterway-57 (River Kopili). The MV VV Giri carried 300 MT of cement from Chandrapur to Hatsingimari, covering 300 km in 12–14 hours. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal hailed it as a major step towards eco-friendly, cost-effective logistics. With this, 1,168 km of Assam’s waterways are now operational, supporting India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and PM Gati Shakti initiatives.
