Assam to Build 130 km of New Embankments, Strengthen 4,000 km to Tackle Floods

Guwahati: Assam Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain said the state will construct 130 km of new embankments and strengthen around 4,000 km of existing ones to improve flood protection. He said recent flash floods in North Assam were triggered by intense rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh and highlighted climate change, river course changes, and erosion as major challenges. The minister added that satellite technology is being used to identify erosion-prone areas and that flood protection measures have significantly improved in vulnerable regions, including Majuli.
