Assam to Celebrate Kati Bihu with Traditional Lamps and Prayers

Guwahati: Assam will celebrate Kati Bihu, also known as Kongali Bihu, on Sunday with traditional rituals and prayers for a good harvest, healthy crops and family well-being. Unlike Rongali and Bhogali Bihu, the festival is observed in a quieter manner during a period when granaries are often relatively empty and farmers await their paddy harvest.
A key tradition is lighting earthen lamps (saaki) near the sacred Tulsi plant and placing Akash Banti or sky lamps in paddy fields. The rituals symbolise hope, prosperity and protection of crops, reflecting Assam’s deep-rooted agricultural traditions and cultural heritage.
