Assam to Establish ₹600-Crore Proton Beam Therapy Centre for Cancer Treatment

Guwahati: The Assam Government has signed an agreement with IBA Particle Therapy India Pvt Ltd to establish the country’s first state government-led Proton Beam Therapy Centre at an estimated cost of ₹600 crore. The agreement was signed on Saturday in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The project will receive ₹315 crore from the World Bank and ₹285 crore from the state government under the ASSIST initiative.

The centre will feature the advanced ProteusONE system, offering precise radiation treatment for cancer patients while reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Specialised training will also be provided to medical professionals. The facility will strengthen cancer treatment services in Assam and the Northeast, complementing the state’s existing network of 12 operational cancer hospitals, with five more planned.
