Assam to Implement 1950 Act for Expulsion of Illegal Foreigners

The Assam Cabinet approved SOPs for implementing the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950. District Commissioners can now decide citizenship status within 10 days of a complaint. Those proven to have entered Assam after 1971 will be expelled immediately. Pending cases will continue in Foreigners’ Tribunals, but no new cases will be sent there. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the decision “historic,” stating the Act will speed up the process of pushing back illegal foreigners.
