Assam to Reduce Electricity Bills by Re. 1 Per Unit Starting April 2025

Assam’s electricity bills will decrease by Re. 1 per unit starting April 1, 2025, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This decision follows public unrest and protests over rising electricity costs and the installation of smart meters. Currently priced at Rs 5.90 per unit, the reduction is intended to ease the financial burden on residents. Despite the planned reduction, protests led by various student unions and political groups continue, expressing dissatisfaction with the state’s energy policies and the impact of smart meters on bills.
