Assam to Tighten Aadhaar Verification Process from October 1

Starting October 1, Assam will implement a stricter verification process for Aadhaar card applicants, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The move follows concerns that in some districts, Aadhaar cardholders exceed the population, suggesting possible illegal procurement by foreign nationals. Applicants must now provide their National Register of Citizens (NRC) application number, with the rule applying to all districts except tea garden areas. A Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) will be issued soon. The new measures will not affect the 9.35 lakh individuals previously excluded from receiving Aadhaar cards.
