Assam Yet to Appoint Promised Welfare Officers for Assamese Diaspora

The Assam government has not fulfilled its 2019-20 budget promise to appoint welfare officers in major cities across India to address the issues faced by the Assamese diaspora. Many Assamese youth working in the unorganized sector across the country face problems like job loss, harassment, and lack of medical care.

The Labour Commissioner has urged the Labour Department to initiate appointments, but no progress has been made. The “Aami Axomiya” scheme, announced in 2019, aimed to provide support during emergencies and help Assamese individuals living away from home.
