Assam’s ‘Nijut Moina’ Scheme Benefits 3.5 Lakh Girls, But Students Say Support Still Limited

Over 3.5 lakh girl students in Assam are now covered under the Nijut Moina scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance to reduce dropouts and prevent child marriage. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state recorded zero dropout among girls in higher studies last year. The scheme offers ₹1,000–₹2,500 per month depending on the course. While beneficiaries welcome the support, many postgraduate students in Guwahati say ₹2,500 is not enough to meet rising living costs. Some also feel boys from poor families should receive partial support. Despite limitations, students say the scheme helps ease financial pressure and encourages them to continue their education.
