Barak Valley Post Office Closures Trigger Public Outcry, MP Seeks Centre’s Intervention

Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha has urged Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to intervene in the closure of 10 branch and sub-post offices in Assam’s Barak Valley. Closed since August, the offices have caused widespread hardship, especially for the elderly, farmers, and remote-area residents who rely on postal services for banking, remittances, and government schemes. Purkayastha noted that the offices were profit-making and warned of revenue loss, demanding their immediate reopening to restore essential services.
