Beki River Erosion Threatens Vital Highway in Assam’s Barpeta District

The alternate state highway linking Barpeta and Abhayapuri via Lengtisinga, crucial for connecting Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts in Assam, is severely threatened by erosion from the Beki River. Significant portions of the road at Korarkur in Janiya have already been eroded, altering the river’s course and complicating travel for heavy vehicles. Despite the risk of complete washout during floods, local residents’ appeals for a permanent solution have been ignored. Temporary geobag placements provide insufficient protection, leading to fears of the road’s collapse in the upcoming monsoon. Locals criticize the inaction of their MLA Rafiqul Islam and MP Abdul Khalaque, stressing the urgent need for intervention to prevent further damage and disruption to the region’s economy and logistics.
