Centre Actively Reviewing ST Status for Six Assam Communities
Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram said the Centre is seriously considering granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six Assam communities—Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes. However, no final decision has been made. The Registrar General of India and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes are reviewing the proposal. The Assam government has submitted recommendations. The process follows set modalities laid down in 1999 and later amendments. Meanwhile, a youth group has urged the PM to probe alleged corruption in Assam’s SC Welfare Directorate.
