Centre Seeks Meta Action on Deepfakes, Reviews Intermediary Status

New Delhi: The Centre has asked Meta to take corrective measures against deepfakes and other harmful AI-generated content on its platforms, sources said.
The government is also examining whether Meta’s recommendation systems, which determine what content users see and promote, could affect its status as an intermediary under India’s Information Technology Act.
Under Section 79 of the IT Act, intermediaries receive certain legal protections if they comply with prescribed due-diligence requirements. The Centre is also expected to examine the practices of other major digital platforms under the same legal framework.
