Chautal Students Protest in Chirang, Demand ST Status for Community
Members of the Chautal Student Association staged a protest in Chirang district demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Chautal community. Led by the central committee, protesters burned effigies of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and tribal leader Aditya Khaklari on NH-27, accusing them of betraying the community.
CSA leader Durga Soren criticized the government’s inaction and warned of intensified protests if their demands remain unmet. The agitation briefly disrupted traffic as police intervened to maintain order. The ST status demand for six ethnic groups, including the Chautal, remains unresolved for decades.
