Clashes Erupt in Assam Village Over Alleged Police Brutality

A tense situation emerged in Kayakuchi, Barpeta District, Assam, after clashes between locals and police following an alleged incident of police brutality. The conflict began when an on-duty police constable, Samsul Haque, was searching for an absconding accused in the village. A Village Defence Party (VDP) member, instructed to assist in the search, got into a heated argument with Haque. The VDP member claimed he was beaten when he refused to assist due to lack of knowledge about the accused’s whereabouts.

Eyewitnesses supported the VDP member’s account, leading to villagers surrounding the police vehicle and demanding an explanation for the assault. The situation escalated until Sumit Talukdar, in charge of the Kayakuchi outpost, arrived with reinforcements to rescue the detained officers and restore order.

While calm has returned to the village, locals have expressed concerns over police behavior and demanded that authorities ensure respectful treatment of civilians in the future.
