CM Sarma Targets Congress Ahead of 2026 Polls, Launches Multiple Projects in Lakhimpur

Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma questioned the Congress party’s relevance in the state, alleging it has lost its mass base and failed to deliver welfare benefits during its tenure. Speaking in Lakhimpur after a women’s welfare programme under MMUA, Sarma claimed the Opposition lacks grassroots presence and no longer reflects indigenous Assamese aspirations.

The Chief Minister also accused the Congress of political exploitation and criticised its absence on the ground. Earlier, Sarma laid foundation stones for several development projects in Lakhimpur, including a Rs 9.90 crore sewage treatment plant, a new Rs 51.62 crore District Commissioner’s office, a residential school campus costing over Rs 30 crore, and a Rs 40.44 crore road project to improve regional connectivity.
