The death toll from Colombia’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake has climbed to at least 164, with rescue teams continuing to search collapsed buildings and remote areas for survivors.

The powerful quake struck western Colombia on August 10, causing major damage in several cities and triggering numerous aftershocks. Authorities have declared a national emergency as they assess the extent of the destruction.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 107 km in a highly active seismic region. Colombia’s location near several interacting tectonic plates makes earthquakes relatively common, although a disaster of this scale is rare.

Rescue and recovery operations remain underway, with difficult access to some remote areas complicating efforts to determine the full extent of the casualties and damage.
