Deepor Beel Faces Ecological Collapse: Urgent Action Needed
Deepor Beel, a vital wetland in Guwahati, is on the brink of ecological collapse due to government and private activities. Pramod Kalita, General Secretary of the Deepor Beel Suraksha Manch, sounded the alarm at an event near the Beel. He highlighted the loss of 70% of its area to a dumping ground established two decades ago, exacerbated by pollution from wastewater. Disruptions to water flow and lack of biodiversity research increase flood risks and threaten the Beel’s ecological balance. Kalita called for immediate action to protect the rights of the Azara fishing community and preserve Deepor Beel’s biodiversity.
