ECI Warns Against AI and Deepfake Misuse Ahead of Assam Elections

The Election Commission of India has warned political parties against the misuse of AI and deepfake technology during the Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026 campaign. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said nodal officers will monitor misleading digital content and take action, including content removal or filing FIRs.
The warning comes after an AI-generated video involving Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sparked controversy online. Political parties including Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress have also raised concerns about AI-based campaign content.
Officials and legal experts say India currently lacks a specific law regulating AI, though provisions under the Information Technology Act, 2000 may apply in cases of misinformation or cybercrime.
