EEHV Virus Emerges as Growing Threat to Assam’s Elephants

Guwahati: Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) has emerged as a serious threat to elephants in Assam, with several recent cases reported among captive and wild elephants. This year, captive elephant calves in Nameri and Tinsukia tested positive for the virus, while another suspected case is under investigation.
Officials say at least 20 elephant deaths in the state over the past decade have been linked to EEHV. Conservationists fear the actual number could be higher, as cases have also been detected in the wild.
