Elephant Rampage Devastates Crops in West Karbi Anglong Villages

Farmers in the Southern Forest Range of West Karbi Anglong are facing daily elephant invasions, with herds destroying crops across villages like Hawaipur, Jiribasa, Belbari, and Mailoo.
Paddy, vegetables, and sugarcane fields have been trampled, leaving many families on the brink of starvation as the harvest season nears. Villagers say their efforts to chase the elephants away with fires and drums have failed.
Despite repeated appeals, locals accuse the authorities of inaction and are demanding immediate government intervention — including permanent anti-poaching teams, better elephant corridor management, and higher, faster compensation for crop losses.
For many, the conflict has become a nightly battle for survival.
