Eviction Drive Clears 664 Families from VGR Land in Biswanath

The Biswanath district administration on Sunday launched a large eviction drive at Baghmari, clearing alleged encroachments on 265 bighas of Village Grazing Reserve land. The operation began around 6 am with heavy police deployment and over 17 bulldozers.

Officials said eviction notices were earlier served to 732 families, but 68 remain protected under a stay by the Gauhati High Court. The remaining 664 families are being evicted after earlier attempts were stalled by court orders.

Tension prevailed as residents protested, claiming decades-long residence and denial of land pattas. Meanwhile, three leaders of the All Assam Minority Students’ Union were arrested late Saturday night on suspicion of trying to disrupt the eviction process, police said.
