Excise Department Denies Imposing Sales Targets on Liquor Shops

Reports suggesting the Assam Excise Department set targets for liquor shops have been debunked by Excise Commissioner Jitu Doley. The controversy arose from a misunderstanding of directives given during a video conference. While concerns were raised over declining retail sales, Doley clarified that the department doesn’t set targets for liquor shops due to its inability to influence consumption. Instead, the focus remains on curbing illegal liquor sales. Officials, including Kamrup (Metro) Excise Superintendent Debajit Nath, affirmed no targets were imposed on liquor shops, emphasizing the impracticality of such measures.
