Opposition Grows Against Proposed 55 MW Kulsi Hydropower Project

Guwahati: Opposition is mounting against the proposed 55 MW Kulsi Multipurpose Hydropower Project along the Assam-Meghalaya border, with local organisations and environmental groups raising concerns over its potential impact on the river’s ecosystem, endangered river dolphins, and the livelihoods of communities dependent on the Kulsi River.
The resistance intensified after the Brahmaputra Board handed over the project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) to Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) on July 30. Several organisations have demanded that the government reconsider the project, warning of intensified protests if construction proceeds without the consent of local communities.
