Former NRC Coordinator Urges Centre to Delay Assam Census Data Publication

Guwahati: Former Assam NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting that the publication of Assam’s Census data be withheld until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is re-verified.

Sarma alleged that the 2019 NRC contains significant errors, with ineligible persons included and many genuine citizens excluded. He said a petition seeking NRC re-verification is pending before the Supreme Court and argued that releasing Census data before correcting the NRC could affect the state’s demographic records and have implications for national security.
