Gauhati High Court Criticizes Assam Government for Inaction on Guwahati Waterlogging Issue
The Gauhati High Court has strongly criticized the Assam government and relevant departments for their lackadaisical response to a public interest litigation (PIL) addressing persistent waterlogging in Guwahati. Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Kardak Ete expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to respond within the given timeframe. The court emphasized the seriousness of the issue and the apparent lack of initiative from the involved departments. Despite a directive to update the court within 10 days on measures taken to mitigate waterlogging, the government failed to comply. The court has granted another opportunity for response, imposing a penalty of Rs 1000 on each department to be paid to the Gauhati High Court Legal Services Authority.
