Gauhati High Court Lifts Stay on Panchayat Elections in Nine Assam Districts
The Gauhati High Court lifted its interim stay, allowing panchayat elections in nine Assam districts, including Hailakandi and Cachar, to proceed. The court clarified that the elections could be declared illegal if genuine issues arise. The stay had been imposed due to irregularities in the delimitation process. The next hearing is scheduled for February 6 to address pending concerns. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier suggested elections during Bohag Bihu in April to avoid academic disruptions.
