Gauhati High Court Nullifies 935 Police Constable Appointments in Nagaland

The Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court has nullified the appointments of 935 police constables hired between January 2018 and October 2019 without public advertisement. Justice Devashis Baruah ordered the Nagaland government to initiate a new recruitment process within six months, ensuring transparency.

The decision followed a writ petition from unemployed youth in Kohima and Chümoukedima, who alleged that the original appointments involved backdoor methods that undermined fair competition. The court has allowed those affected to participate in the new recruitment with relaxed age limits, while maintaining strict adherence to basic qualifications. Current appointees can continue working for six months or until new hires are made.
