Gauhati University Seminar Explores Link Between Fruit-Selling Problems and Algebraic Curves

Guwahati: The Department of Mathematics at Gauhati University organised a seminar featuring an invited lecture by Prof. Kalyan Chakraborty, Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP. The lecture, titled “Fruits to Algebraic Curves,” explored how a simple fruit-selling problem can lead to a Diophantine equation and reveal deeper connections between number theory and algebraic geometry.
Prof. Chakraborty previously served as Director of the Kerala School of Mathematics and as a professor at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in Allahabad. His lecture offered participants an opportunity to explore the relationship between an everyday mathematical problem and advanced concepts in pure mathematics.
The seminar was attended by faculty members from Gauhati University and Assam Engineering Institute, a postdoctoral research fellow from SRM University-AP, research scholars from the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), and research scholars and students from Gauhati University. The programme provided an academic platform for learning and exchanging ideas in mathematics.
