GMC Launches Cleanliness Competition Among Durga Puja Committees for a Greener Guwahati

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced its second annual cleanliness competition among Durga Puja committees. With prizes between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, the initiative aims to promote sustainable practices during the festival. Mayor Mrigen Sarania stated that 175 Puja committees will be awarded, and over 150 committees have already agreed to participate. The competition will run until Diwali.

GMC has issued guidelines aligned with the Swachh Bharat Mission, including a ban on single-use plastics and proper waste management. The competition will also reward NGOs involved in waste management.

Additionally, a similar contest will be held among the city’s wards until January 2025, with top wards receiving development funds up to Rs 10 lakh. The GMC’s goal is to maintain cleanliness citywide under the slogan: “Our Guwahati is our Responsibility.”
