Gogoi Targets BJP Over Nagaon Bypoll Ticket, Opposition Discusses Strategy

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi has criticised the BJP’s decision to field former Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma in the upcoming Nagaon Assembly bypoll, alleging that long-serving party workers are being overlooked.

Gogoi also questioned Sharma’s political entry, while Congress leader Rakibul Hussain raised allegations concerning Sharma’s tenure as Nagaon DC. Sharma rejected the criticism, saying the people of Assam would judge his 36 years of public service.

Meanwhile, the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and CPI(M) held discussions in Beltola over their strategy for the October 6 bypoll. AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the parties were discussing a possible joint approach, while Congress has yet to announce its candidate for the Nagaon seat.
