Govt Sanctions Sewerage Plant for Guwahati; Pollution Control Measures Discussed

The Assam government has sanctioned funds for a sewerage treatment plant under the Mission Flood Free Guwahati initiative, announced PHE Minister Jayanta Mallabarua during the Budget session. The project will commence this year under the supervision of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Concerns over pollution in Bharalu, Mora Bharalu, and Bahini rivers were raised, with doubts over the efficiency of cleaning projects. To improve oversight, monitoring committees comprising officials and locals will be formed.

The Swachh Guwahati Abhiyaan, launched on December 15, 2024, aims to boost public participation in keeping the city clean. MLA Ramendra Nath Kalita highlighted a report ranking Bharalu as India’s most polluted river, urging expert intervention, CCTV surveillance, and long-term river tourism development.
