Guwahati Residents Oppose Petrol Pump in Wildlife Habitat

Residents of Joypur, Kharghuli, have raised concerns over Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.’s (IOCL) plan to establish a petrol pump in a wildlife-rich green zone near Ramsa Hill and the Brahmaputra River. They fear the project will harm local fauna, including deer and birds, and disrupt the area’s ecological balance.
Residents also allege that authorities have filled a waterbody essential for wildlife, potentially contaminating groundwater and harming aquatic life. The nearest petrol pump at Noonmati is reportedly sufficient, making the new one unnecessary.
IOCL claims the project follows environmental regulations and includes measures to minimize ecological damage, such as vapour recovery systems and green landscaping. However, locals remain unconvinced.
