Villagers in Sonitpur Struggle as Wild Elephants Wreak Havoc

Villagers in Sonitpur’s Bihaguri area face sleepless nights as a herd of over 100 wild elephants damages crops and disrupts life. Farmers report extensive destruction of paddy, potatoes, and vegetables on fertile Brahmaputra riverbanks, leading to significant losses.

The problem is worsened by illegal constructions blocking the elephants’ corridor, allegedly facilitated by corrupt officials. Naturalists highlight how these disruptions force elephants into human settlements, escalating conflicts.

The district administration has imposed restrictions in Arimora Chapori, banning public movement from 4:00 pm to 8:00 am to ensure safety and aid forest department operations. Violators face penalties under local laws.
