Indigenous Groups in Upper Assam Issue August 15 Ultimatum to Suspected Illegal Immigrants
Twenty indigenous groups in Upper Assam have given suspected Bangladeshi immigrants until August 15 to leave the region. At a consultative meet in Sivasagar, they passed resolutions demanding identification, deportation, and voter list deletion of “suspected citizens,” with the detection base year shifted to 1951. They also supported eviction drives from government and protected lands, urged landowners not to sell to “foreign suspects,” and called for document checks on tenants and workers. A massive rally is planned for August 20 to decide further action.
