Kanad Purkayastha Presses for Separate Silchar Railway Division in Rajya Sabha

Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha on Tuesday urged the Centre to establish a separate railway division at Silchar, citing excessive workload on the Lumding Division and the strategic importance of southern Assam. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, he said the Lumding Division has expanded far beyond manageable limits after broad-gauge conversion and new line additions. Purkayastha also highlighted frequent monsoon disruptions, the proposed Trans-Asian Railway Network, and noted that despite a 2012 Railway Board notification, the Silchar Division is yet to be set up. He called for early action to establish the division near Silchar for better operations and regional development.
