Land Dispute Murder: Seven Individuals, Including Court Employee, Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Assam

In a significant development, the district and session judge of Hailakandi, Sanjoy Hazarika, has sentenced seven individuals, including a court employee, to life imprisonment for the murder of Abdul Basit Mazumdar seven years ago over a land dispute. The judgment, delivered under Sessions Case 10/2018, includes life imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and three years under Section 148. Each person has also been fined Rs 20,000, with a default sentence of six additional months.

The convicted individuals, involved in the attack on Abdul Basit Mazumdar in Nishchintapur village in 2017, include Kamal Uddin Mazumdar, Fakrul Islam Laskar, Anwar Hussain Laskar, Asab Uddin Mazumdar, Nezam Uddin Mazumdar, Anam Uddin Mazumdar, and Ainul Haque Laskar. The court considered statements from 16 witnesses, including an additional district commissioner and a medical officer, during the trial. The incident led to the filing of case number 476/2017, and the police investigation resulted in the arrest and subsequent court proceedings against the accused.
