Liquor Revenue in Assam Sees Sharp Rise
Assam’s liquor revenue has surged, reaching ₹4,281 crore in 2024-25 (till January) from ₹1,433 crore in 2016-17. Excise Minister Atul Bora informed the Assembly that the state has 1,836 foreign liquor retail outlets, 1,060 bars, and 996 country liquor shops.
Despite concerns over rising alcohol consumption, Bora stated that revenue collection is not the government’s goal. Measures like awareness programs and stricter monitoring of illegal liquor sales are in place. Assam recorded its highest liquor revenue in 2023-24 at ₹4,798.73 crore.
