Low-Cost Solar Fence Boosts Crop Harvest and Protects Fields from Elephants in Assam
Farmers in Gosaihat village, Assam, have significantly increased their paddy harvest by installing a low-cost solar fence to protect their crops from wild elephants. With technical support from Aaranyak and WWF, the community-managed fence was first installed in November 2023, allowing farmers to harvest 90% of their crops. Encouraged by this success, the farmers expanded the fence to protect 10 hectares of fields this year. The fence will be removed and stored after the harvest for future use, demonstrating a sustainable solution to human-elephant conflict.
