Meherpur Dumping Ground Transforms into Sustainable Waste Management Model
The Meherpur dumping ground in Silchar, once burdened with nearly two lakh metric tonnes of waste, is being revived under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. Two major projects — a ₹6.92 crore Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and a ₹15.06 crore Legacy Waste Remediation initiative — are underway with support from DoNER. Nearly 20% of legacy waste has already been processed using modern trommel machines. Segregated plastics are sent to cement factories, inert waste fills low-lying areas, and biodegradable matter is converted into compost, marking a shift toward sustainable waste management.
