NGT Seeks Responses Over Tree Felling Concerns in Deepor Beel Railway Doubling Project

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed authorities to file their responses within two months regarding allegations of unauthorized tree felling linked to the New Bongaigaon–Kamakhya railway track doubling project in and around Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary.

The petition claims that around 100 mature trees have already been cut despite the project not receiving final forest or wildlife clearance. It also alleges incomplete environmental scrutiny of land proposed for diversion within the sanctuary’s Eco-Sensitive Zone.

Taking note of the environmental concerns raised, the NGT found that the matter involves substantial ecological issues and has scheduled the next hearing for August 21, 2026. The petitioner has sought an immediate halt to tree-felling activities until all required clearances are obtained.
