Karbi Groups Reassert Historical Claim Over Blocks I & II Amid Assam-Meghalaya Border Talks

Concerns have grown in Karbi Anglong over the Assam-Meghalaya boundary dispute involving Blocks I and II in West Karbi Anglong. Karbi social organisations have rejected claims that the areas belong to Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills, asserting that the territories have historically been part of the Karbi kingdom.

The issue comes as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma have agreed to speed up efforts to resolve the long-standing border dispute.

Community leaders have urged Meghalaya to recognise historical records, including a 1950 Assam government notification that placed Blocks I and II within the then Mikir Hills district. Tensions remain high in the area, particularly around Tapat village, where clashes and land-related disputes have occurred in recent years. Residents continue to demand a swift and fair resolution that respects historical and administrative boundaries.
