Nirmala Sitharaman Hails Assam’s Semiconductor Facility as ‘Turning Point’ for Northeast

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday hailed Assam’s new semiconductor facility at Jagiroad as a “turning point” for the Northeast and a model for innovation-led growth.
Speaking at ‘Enterprise Assam – Viksit Bharat 2047’ in Morigaon, Sitharaman urged youth to seize this “golden moment” and pursue entrepreneurship, highlighting the state’s rise as an emerging industrial hub.
She praised Tata Electronics’ upcoming OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility, calling it a landmark in India’s journey toward technological self-reliance. The Minister said the project is attracting global talent and will boost Assam’s role in the nation’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Sitharaman also encouraged startups to utilize the Centre’s ₹1 lakh crore R&D fund and collaborate with IIT Guwahati for innovation.
“This unit will not just create jobs but also set global standards and empower local entrepreneurs,” she said, urging Assam’s youth to “take risks, innovate, and lead India’s tech revolution from the East.”
