NRC Draft Delay Sparks Protests in Assam
The Coordination Committee Against CAA, Assam, led by Dr. Hiren Gohain and Deben Tamuly, has urged the Registrar General of India (RGI) to release the final NRC draft, submitted on August 31, 2019. They argue there’s no justification for withholding the updated list, as the Supreme Court has already rejected calls for reverification.
In a letter to the Chief Justice of India, the committee praised the court’s recent decision upholding clause 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and plans to appeal to the President of India.
Separately, the committee condemned the relocation of the statue of Assamese icon Lakshminath Bezbarua from Guwahati Club and the felling of trees at Dighalipukhuri for development projects, calling it an affront to Assam’s heritage. Prominent figures have also voiced opposition to these actions.
