Oil Exploration Proposal in Hollongapar Sanctuary Raises Concerns
The NBWL has deferred a proposal for oil exploration in the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. The project, categorized as highly polluting, violates ESZ guidelines prohibiting such activities.
The sanctuary, home to critically endangered western hoolock gibbons and diverse wildlife, faces threats from proposed exploration points located in elephant habitats. Conservationists warn of long-term ecological harm and increased human-elephant conflict.
Despite these concerns, the Assam government approved the project without public consultation, drawing criticism from environmentalists. An NBWL team will inspect the site soon to assess the potential impact.
